Bleichenbacher, Lukas. “Linguicism in Hollywood Movies? Representations Of, and Audience Reactions to Multilingualism in Mainstream Movie Dialogues.” Multilingua 31, no. 2 (May 2012): 155–76. doi:10.1515/multi-2012-0008
Lukas mentions an interesting situation in Hollywood movie about the sociolinguistics. He found the negative stereotyping of characters constructed in movie. So he present and exemplify three different quantitative and qualitative approaches to the study of mono-versus multilingualism in movie dialogues. In this process, Lukas identifies the linguicism problem in movie, usage of multilingual language in the movie, and the metalinguistic dialogues which is related with the movie.
Lukas has a brief overview of different sociolinguistic approaches to movie dialogues based on character. But his point is not the content of movie dialogues. He focuses on the language usage in various kinds of movies. Lukas combined the result from quantitative research and qualitative research and gets a new conclusion which is useful for analysis the usage of language in movie. It is a pretty good research.
Lukas’s research includes qualitative and quantitative research. It is pretty good to be used in the research of language in films. At the beginning, Lukas mentions the special situation about language use in film. Then he does the research about language in film from the part of content, dialogues, and usage. I hope Lukas’s result is helpful for researching language element in film.
