Draft 1: Outline

Please fill in this outline. For our meeting, you do not have to have complete sentences or perfect grammar. You do. However, need to have every section filled out.

Turn in: please post the outline to your blog
AND paste a link to this blog entry next to your name in the Conference sign-up Google Doc

I’m looking forward to talking with you about your research.

1. Presentation of relevant background, including other research, related to your project

1.      In the book “Suspense: Conceptualizations, Theoretical Analyses, and Empirical Explorations” the suspense is an uncertain experience which is including hopes and fears. The story which has capacity to change audience’s emotion.
2.      Hans Hoeken remains suspense has ability to appeal reader to guess the end of the story. A good suspense can add points to the story. A good suspense can evoke audience’s curiosity, which can evoke different emotion.
3.      Fred Everett Maus states music is a way to narrative something by using vocabulary. Music has power to replay audience’s emotions such as sadness.
4.      Marilyn Boltz, Matthew Schulkind and Suzanne Kantra states the background music in film changes with the development of story in film. Music has power to increase  the emotion in the film events.
5.      Sacks Olive supports his points in “The Power of Musicthat music has ability to effect audience’s emotion.
6.      Yu-Hao Chen, Jin-Hau Kuo Wei-Ta Chu and Jia-ling Wu believe the music in movie can create image to audience which will give audience a deep memory.
7.      In the book “Suspense: Conceptualizations, Theoretical Analyses, and Empirical Explorations” refers the structural-affect theory of narrative suspense which means the suspene can be recognized by narrative and story concerned.
8.      Maryanne Garry and Kimberley refer the function of visual image and human memory.
9.      Ivan N. McCollom mentions the theme of psychological thriller is related with reality.
10.  Mark Jancovich refers the plot in psychological is different from other movies.

2. Discussion of the relevance/importance of your focus to (identify the “problem” or gap in
knowledge that your research will provide more information about)

1.      Lukas Bleichenbacher covers the language usage in movie has magic function to make a dialogue. Whitaker Rod mentions that the language has ability to create image which will effects people’s memory. However, I will address usage of language is just an aid of expression. Only the dialogue which includes conflicts has ability to create a wonderful suspense that makes audience anxiety and fear.
2.      PeterVorderoe, Hans J. Wulff and Mike Friedrichsen focus the uncertainty of suspense in story which includes fear and hope two parts, and audience’s story concerned. She overlooks the conflict of two opposite in suspense. I will focus on this part.
3.      Ivan N. McCollom covers the theme of psychological thrillers is related with reality. Mark Jancovich covers the plot in psychological thriller is an image which different from other movies, which make audience fear. However, no one addresses how the reality affects the content of suspense in psychological thriller.
Depart from Literature Review
Example: While Person A covers this and Person B covers that, no one addresses z. I will address z.
Example 2: Person A discusses this, focusing on x and y; however, she overlooks the aspect of z. I will focus on z.

3. Clear statement of a research question to focus your analysis=what the analysis will show

I will focus on the role of suspense in psychological thriller, the six senses, black swarm and butterfly effect. In these three movie, the suspense is construction for separation opposite parts by using language.
Example: I will focus on the role of z in this.
Or I will focus on the relationship between z and this.

4. Clear identification & explanation of methods to conduct your research
Using literary analysis, I will study the elements in movie which can create suspense. How the element works in suspense which engage audience into fear and anxiety.
Example: Using literary analysis, I will study the treatment of z in this.

5. Presentation and analysis of data or information (see requirements for short analysis essay)
Here is one instance of the suspense in psychological thriller with language usage.
The language creates a confused image which attack audience’s curiosity. Every suspect is built up on uncertainty, just like this one. The surprisingly image impressed audience a lot. In a word, this image has become audience’s memory.
In the beginning of the Six Sense, the young man is a patient who suffers from mood disorder. He said “Do you know why you’re afraid when you’re alone?, I do” It is a suspense. It makes audience confused in the beginning because audience doesn’t know the meaning of young man’s words. In this case, the applicant of language makes up this suspense and creates a new image, keep audience’s memory.
In the Black Swan, the boss of the company strips down a new plot of Swan Lake. He says in the beginning that “which of you can embody both Swans, and the White and Black” In fact, it is a new and amazing idea. This sentence makes suspense about dancing “Swan Lake.” It also tells theme of the whole movie is related with dancing swan queen.
In butterfly effect, the beginning of the movie, Evan writes down a sentence. But it is not considered into an effective suspense.
In these three movies, the language as special tool helps audience to create an image which attacks people’s curiosity. But not all the image which creates by language has conflict and can be regarded as a great suspense. The role of the language suspense attracts audience’s curiosity

Here is one instance of z happening in this.
                Here is how it works.
Here is what it means (i.e. my idea is right).
Here is another example of z in this.
Here is how it works.
And here is what it means (i.e. my idea is right).
Here is a third example of z in this.
                Here is how it works.
And here is what it means (i.e. my idea is right).

6. Discussion of findings

Finding: I have found the suspect is built into separation. In these three movies, the suspense is construction for separation opposite parts by using language to express. In these three movies, the suspense has been separate into two parts. One part is showed in public, the other part is hide behind the true. In the butterfly effect, it separates self into two parts. In the Six Sense, it separates into dead and living. And in the Black Swan, the reality and fiction has been separated into two parts. These separations make up a whole suspense in psychological thriller and make audience fear.

Given my findings (summarize findings), I have noticed this pattern (explain pattern/relationship/idea)

7. Conclusions that connect findings to the research question
Therefore, we can assume that the role of suspense in psychological thriller is increasing audience’s feeling of fear, through separate movie element.
Therefore, we can assume that the role of z in this is _______.
